British authorities and health professionals have started a press campaign in attracting attention to the danger that lurks on artificial tanning salons. The campaign appeared following the case of a young woman who lost her sight as a result of prolonged tanning sessions at the solarium.
Sam Laining, a 23 year old woman from Sunderland, developed benign tumors in both eyes following prolonged sun sessions, doctors saying that even surgery can not save her eyes. She arrived in this dramatic situation after deciding to tan without the safety goggles, as she wanted to tan without light-colored areas around the eyes. Artificial tanning salon association in the UK may not be held responsible for criminal liability as the girl intentionally chose to ignore the measures of protection offered.
At the age of 19 years, Sam Laining began frequenting artificial tanning salons. Three months ago she started to accuse a feeling of dryness in the eyes, with the appearance of red spots on the iris. The Ophthalmologist verdict, following a thorough consultation, was pterygium, a benign tumor caused by exposure to ultraviolet light.
