The 45.5 carat diamond-the size of a walnut will be exposed for several months on a miniature pedestal in Washington D.C..
Meanwhile, jewelers will create an ornament worthy to hold the diamond in it’s center. The Blue Diamond will be surrounded by white diamonds, to highlight his color.
Formed more than one billion years ago, the diamond has been found in India and is believed to have been part of the French crown jewels. Disappeared after the French Revolution, came into possession of jeweler Harry Winston, who donated to a museum in Washington in 1958.
Its blue color is given by Boron, a chemical element present within the diamond.
Legend has it that the diamond gate with it a curse, but the American museum director said he only brought luck to the institution.
